Eating in Ascoli Piceno
Ascoli gave its name to an olive eaten all over Italy, and almost never the real one.
The olives
Oliva Ascolana del Piceno DOP is a large, tender cultivar, stoned in a spiral, stuffed with three meats and fried. The frozen "ascolane" sold elsewhere are another thing: here they are eaten the day they are made.
The fritto
Fritto misto all'ascolana brings together olives, cremini (cubes of fried custard), lamb chops, artichokes and courgettes: sweet and savoury on the same plate, and the thing to order.
The other dishes
- Vincisgrassi and egg maccheroncini;
- Lamb and mutton grilled over embers, from the Sibillini mountains;
- Ciauscolo IGP, the soft salami you spread on bread.
The glass and the coffee
Rosso Piceno DOC and Offida DOCG (Pecorino and Passerina) among the wines. Anisetta goes in the coffee: you ask for it "corretto anisetta", and it is a habit of the city.
