Eating in Avellino

Avellino is Irpinia: inland mountains, chestnut woods, and three wine denominations that made Campania's reputation.

The three DOCGs

Taurasi DOCG from Aglianico — the "Barolo of the South" — Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Greco di Tufo DOCG among the whites. Three DOCGs in one province, all within half an hour.

From the woods

  • Castagna di Montella IGP and Marrone di Roccadaspide: eaten roasted, in cakes and in soups;
  • Black truffle of Bagnoli Irpino, with its autumn fair;
  • Porcini and Irpinian hazelnuts.

The dishes

  • Cavatelli and fusilli with meat ragù or with chestnuts;
  • Minestra maritata and the feast-day cardoon soup;
  • Aged caciocavallo and pecorino carmasciano;
  • Roast lamb and kid.

The sweets

Irpinian torrone and susamielli; at Christmas pastiera appears here too, though it is Neapolitan.

Opening hours and closing days change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
