Eating in Caserta

Caserta is buffalo country: the Volturno plain is the heart of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP, and almost everything else turns around it.

The buffalo

You buy it in the morning at the dairies and eat it the same day: it is a fresh dairy product, not a cheese for the fridge. The same chain gives buffalo ricotta, smoked provola and buffalo meat.

The dishes

  • Mozzarella in carrozza, breaded and fried;
  • Pasta e patate and the feast-day minestra maritata;
  • Casertana black pork, a recovered native breed, in the cured meats;
  • Paestum artichokes and pickled papaccelle peppers at Christmas.

The fruit

Mela Annurca Campana IGP ripens on the ground, on straw beds, where it reddens one side at a time.

In the glass

Falerno del Massico DOC is the heir of Roman *Falernum*: red from Aglianico and Piedirosso, white from Falanghina. Asprinio di Aversa DOC comes from vines married to poplars, up to fifteen metres tall.

Opening hours and closing days change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
