Eating in Catanzaro

Catanzaro sits on three hills between two seas, and it has one dish, eaten in the hand.

The morzeddhu

Morzeddhu (or morzello) is a stew of veal offal — tripe, heart, lung — cooked long with tomato, chilli and oregano, and served inside the pitta, the ring-shaped bread. It is eaten standing in the putiche of the old centre, and it is the city's signature dish.

The other dishes

  • Fileja — pasta rolled around a rod, with 'nduja or pork ragù;
  • Sagne chine for feast days, the Calabrian lasagne with small meatballs and hard-boiled eggs;
  • Stuffed aubergines and peppers with breadcrumbs;
  • Oily fish from the two gulfs, Squillace and Sant'Eufemia.

The products

Pecorino del Monte Poro, soppressata, capocollo and 'nduja: Calabrian cured meats all carry chilli, in varying amounts.

In the glass

Lamezia DOC and Scavigna DOC, with Gaglioppo and Magliocco among the reds.

Opening hours and closing days change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
