Eating in Grosseto
Grosseto is the city of the Maremma, and the Maremma is a land of herdsmen, scrub and drained marshes. The food follows.
The dishes
- Acquacotta maremmana — onion, celery, tomato, stale bread and a poached egg on top. It is the field workers' dish, and it has never gone away;
- Tortelli maremmani — large, filled with ricotta and spinach, with beef or wild boar ragù;
- Stewed wild boar and scottiglia, because the scrub starts behind the town;
- Tortello dolce and biscotti di mezz'ora among the home-made sweets.
From the coast and the lagoon
The sea is a few kilometres away: eel and grey mullet from the Orbetello lagoon, bottarga, and the fish of the gulf.
In the glass
Morellino di Scansano DOCG is the red of these hills; the province also holds Montecucco and Ansonica della Costa dell'Argentario.
