Eating in La Spezia
La Spezia lies at the head of the Gulf of Poets, with the Cinque Terre on one side and the Lunigiana on the other.
The city's dishes
- Mesciua — a soup of chickpeas, beans and spelt with raw oil poured over. It was born in the port, from the pulses that fell out of sacks during unloading;
- Stuffed muscoli — mussels, called muscoli here, filled with bread, mortadella and cheese and cooked in sauce;
- Sgabei, fried bread dough, with cured meats;
- Farinata and focaccia, as everywhere in Liguria.
From the Lunigiana
Testaroli cooked on a hot slab and dressed with pesto, and torta d'erbi.
From the sea and the vines
The fish of the gulf, and on the Cinque Terre terraces the white Cinque Terre DOC and Sciacchetrà DOC, a sweet wine made in tiny quantities. Colli di Luni DOC completes the province.
