Eating in Padova
Padua has one of Italy's largest markets on its doorstep — Prato della Valle and the two squares of the Erbe and the Frutta — and a farmyard kitchen.
The dishes
- Bigoli with duck — thick pasta with duck sauce, cooked in the bird's own broth;
- Padovana hen, the crested breed, pan-cooked or boiled;
- Risotto with bruscandoli (wild hop shoots), made in spring;
- Salt cod and baby octopus from the market stalls.
The market
Under the Salone are the historic shops: that is where the city buys its cured meats, cheese and meat, and there is eating all around it.
In the glass
The Colli Euganei DOC make reds and whites a quarter of an hour from the centre, and Fior d'Arancio DOCG is their moscato.
