Eating in Siena

Siena eats what the crete and the Chianti hills put around it, with a kitchen of few things done well.

The pasta

Pici are fat spaghetti rolled by hand one at a time, without egg. They are dressed all'aglione — with the sweet, oversized garlic of the Valdichiana — or with duck ragù, or with fried breadcrumbs.

The rest of the table

  • Pecorino Toscano DOP and the pecorinos of the Siena crete, eaten here at several stages of ageing;
  • Finocchiona IGP, the salami made with wild fennel;
  • Cinta Senese DOP, the black woodland pig, recognisable by its white band.

The sweets, which are medieval

Panforte, ricciarelli and cavallucci were not invented for Christmas: they are spice and honey sweets this city has made for centuries, and the historic pastry shops have them all year.

In the glass

The province of Siena holds Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano and Vernaccia di San Gimignano: four denominations within an hour.

Opening hours and closing days change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
