Eating in Taranto

Taranto is the city of two seas, and mussel farming in the Mar Piccolo is documented from Roman times.

From the sea

  • Taranto mussels, raw, gratinated, or in the tiella with rice and potatoes;
  • Oysters from the Mar Piccolo, eaten at the counter with lemon;
  • Alici arraganate and curled octopus, beaten against the rocks;
  • Ciambotto, the fisherman's soup of small fish.

From inland

The Valle d'Itria starts half an hour away: Capocollo di Martina Franca, a Slow Food presidium smoked over fragno oak, and the bocconcini of Murgia mozzarella.

The sweets

Pettole in December, sannacchiudere, and Christmas cartellate.

In the glass

Primitivo di Manduria DOC belongs to this province, along with Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG; in white, the Verdeca of the Valle d'Itria.

Opening hours and closing days change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
