Restaurants in the province of Belluno

Belluno is the Dolomites, and its cooking does not resemble the rest of the Veneto: it is alpine, butter instead of oil, with a tradition of high-pasture cheeses that is coming back.

What you eat here

• Casunziei ampezzani — half-moons filled with beetroot, melted butter, poppy seeds and smoked ricotta. The colour is exactly what it looks like.
• Pastin — minced, spiced beef and pork, pan-fried or grilled.
• Schiz — fresh cheese seared in butter and served hot with polenta.
• Formaggio Piave DOP and Morlacco del Grappa, and woodland mushrooms.
• Fagiolo di Lamon della Vallata Bellunese IGP, in pasta e fagioli and in soup.
• Fregolotta and strudel: the pastry here looks north.

The wine

Little is made in the province, but the Colli di Conegliano begin just beyond; mountain meats are drunk with Raboso or Trentino reds.
