Restaurants in the province of Benevento

The Sannio is hills and river, and it lives on two things you find few other places: a white grape that is at home here and a liqueur named after the town.

What you eat here

• Falanghina del Sannio — the province's white, fresh and almondy, drunk young and cheap for what it gives.
• Torrone di Benevento, hard or soft, and *croccantino*.
• Strega liqueur, saffron-yellow, born here and used in pastry too.
• Sannio olive oil, caciocavallo and mountain pecorino from the Matese.
• Scarpariello and cecatielli, humble pastas with tomato and pecorino.

The wine

Falanghina is the name to look for, but the Sannio also makes Aglianico, Coda di Volpe and Greco: one of those areas where you drink well for less than you expect.
