Restaurants in the province of Enna

Enna is the only Sicilian province with no coast, and the highest: wheat, pasture, reservoirs. The cooking is inland, and it has a cheese found nowhere else.

What you eat here

• Piacentinu ennese DOP — pecorino with saffron and whole black peppercorns, yellow and fragrant.
• Lentils from the inland fields and broad beans, in soup with wild fennel.
• Frascatula and maccu — a purée of dried broad beans, one of the island's oldest dishes.
• Fennel sausage and roast lamb.
• Lake fish from Pergusa, and mushrooms from the Nicosia woods.

The wine

Little is made, but high up: Enna's Nero d'Avola and Nerello carry more acidity than lowland versions, and are starting to be noticed.
