Lecco is the arm of the lake that leads up to the mountains: freshwater fish, polenta and valley cheeses, with a pastry tradition of its own.

What you eat here

• Missoltini and whitefish, with yellow or buckwheat polenta.
• Cazzöla (cassoeula) — cabbage and the humbler cuts of pork, slow-cooked. The Lombard winter dish.
• Polenta uncia and tòch, and pizzoccheri from the nearby Valtellina.
• Cheeses from the Valsassina, taleggio and goat's cheeses.
• Maize bread and paradèl, a sweet flour-and-water fritter.

The wine

Little is made locally; the Bergamo hills and the Valtellina supply what really goes with this food: light, taut mountain Nebbiolo.
