Restaurants in the province of Lucca

Lucca is the plain, the Garfagnana and the Versilia: three different places within half an hour. It is also one of Italy's finest olive-oil areas.

What you eat here

• Farro della Garfagnana IGP — spelt, in soup with beans, the mountain dish.
• Tordelli lucchesi — meat ravioli dressed with ragù, not butter.
• Buccellato — a sweet ring loaf with raisins and anise, taken as a visiting gift.
• Extra virgin olive oil from the Colline Lucchesi, delicate and green.
• In the Versilia: fish, cacciucco, clams; at Viareggio, bomboloni by the sea.

The wine

The Colline Lucchesi and Montecarlo DOC make Sangiovese reds and whites from French varieties planted here two centuries ago; the Garfagnana makes little wine and much spelt.
