Eating in the province of Palermo

Palermo has the most codified street food in Italy and a convent pastry tradition. It is a city where you eat very well for very little, standing up.

What you eat here

  • Pani ca meusa — a roll of veal spleen, *schietto* (plain) or *maritato* (with ricotta and caciocavallo).
  • Sfincione — thick focaccia with onion, anchovy, tomato and caciocavallo.
  • Panelle and crocché, chickpea fritters and potato croquettes, in bread.
  • Pasta con le sarde and caponata, sweet-and-sour aubergine.
  • Cannolo filled to order with sheep's ricotta, and cassata under marzipan.

The wine

The hills of Palermo and the nearby Contea di Sclafani give Nero d'Avola, Perricone and Catarratto; a little west lies all of Grillo country.

Opening hours change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
