Eating in Belluno
Belluno is the Dolomites, and its cooking is that of mountains bordering what used to be Austria: butter, potatoes, game.
The dishes
- Casunziei — half-moon ravioli filled with beetroot or squash, with melted butter, poppy seeds and smoked ricotta. They come from Cortina and are found across the province;
- Pastin — minced, spiced beef and pork, pan-fried or grilled, served with polenta;
- Schiz — fresh cheese seared in butter and eaten hot;
- Pendolon and lujanie, the mountain cured meats.
The cheeses
Piave DOP and Montasio DOP come from here; Malga Bellunese is the summer-pasture cheese.
The sweets
Strudel, fregolotta and berry tart: the pastry follows the mountains, not the plain.
