Eating in Carmignano

Carmignano is hill country, and its table is that of a wine and olive oil area.

The wine

Carmignano DOCG is one of the oldest denominations in Europe: its area was already mapped out by a decree of Cosimo III in 1716. Cabernet — the "French grape" — has grown alongside Sangiovese here for centuries, which is unusual in Tuscany. The same vineyards give Barco Reale and a vin santo worth the trip.

The dried figs

Carmignano dried figs are a Slow Food presidium: sun-dried, opened flat and paired two by two with an aniseed in between. The traditional pairing is with mortadella di Prato IGP.

At the table

The trattorias are in the village and the hamlets — Comeana, Seano, Poggio alla Malva — in the country of the Medici villa at Artimino and the Etruscan necropolis of Comeana: you have dinner where you spent the day.

Opening hours and closing days change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
