Eating in Catania

Catania sits below Etna and in front of the Ionian, and has a square that has been a fish market since the eighteenth century: A' Piscaria.

The dishes

  • Pasta alla Norma — tomato, fried aubergine, salted ricotta and basil. The name comes from Bellini's opera; he was from Catania;
  • Arancini — masculine here, and pointed, with ragù or butter;
  • Pasta 'ncasciata and Catania's own caponata;
  • Masculini (anchovies) and the oily fish of the market, raw or fried.

Eaten in the hand

Cipollina, siciliana (with tuma cheese and anchovy), cartocciata and bolognese: Catania's rosticceria has its own names, and you buy by the piece.

Breakfast

Granita — almond, mulberry, lemon, pistachio — with brioche col tuppo, which you dip. In summer it is the city's breakfast, not a dessert.

From Etna

Pistacchio di Bronte DOP, green and narrow, harvested every other year; Etna cherries DOP, apples and prickly pears.

In the glass

Etna DOC — Nerello Mascalese in red, Carricante in white — from vines on lava soil, many of them ungrafted.
