Eating in Gorizia

Gorizia sits on the border, and its table holds three kitchens together: Friulian, Slovenian and Austrian.

The rose

The Rosa di Gorizia is a red radicchio that grows in the shape of a bud, picked by hand in winter and priced like a rare flower. It is eaten raw, barely dressed, or with hard-boiled eggs.

The dishes

  • Jota and brovada, as in the rest of Friuli;
  • Goulash and ljubljanska, for the Slovenian and Austrian side;
  • Frico and cjarsons as you climb towards the valleys;
  • Prosciutto di San Daniele DOP and Montasio DOP on the boards.

The sweets

Gubana, presnitz and strucolo de pomi: the same family of rolled pastries as Trieste, with recipes that change from village to village.

In the glass

Collio DOC is one of Italy's best-known white wine areas — Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Istrian Malvasia — and it begins just outside town.

Opening hours and closing days change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
