Eating in Livorno

Livorno is a port city built by people from elsewhere, and it eats exactly like one: humble fish, spices, and dishes that do not exist anywhere else.

Cacciucco

This is the Livorno fish soup, and tradition spells it with five Cs — one for each kind of fish it needs. It is made with whatever the market gives: scorpion fish, dogfish, octopus, cuttlefish, mantis shrimp, served over toasted bread rubbed with garlic.

The other local things

  • Cinque e cinque — the roll filled with chickpea cake, named after what it used to cost;
  • Red mullet alla livornese, stewed in tomato;
  • Salt cod alla livornese and black rice with cuttlefish.

Ponce

Ponce livornese is not a cocktail: it is coffee, rum and a strip of lemon peel — the "sail" — served scalding in a small glass. It is drunk after lunch, and you order it by that name.

Opening hours and closing days change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
