Eating in Lucca

Lucca sits between the plain and the Garfagnana valley, and eats accordingly: filled pasta in town, chestnuts and spelt as you climb.

In town

  • Tordelli lucchesi — half-moon meat ravioli dressed with ragù. They are the Sunday dish, and the pasta is deliberately thick;
  • Spelt soup, made with Farro della Garfagnana IGP;
  • Rovelline, breaded slices of beef finished in tomato.

Cured meats and cheese

Biroldo della Garfagnana is a spiced blood sausage and a Slow Food presidium; alongside it come mondiola and the local pecorinos.

The sweets

Buccellato is the sweet bread with raisins and aniseed that people take home from here. "Whoever comes to Lucca and does not eat buccellato might as well not have come" is a local saying, not a slogan.

In the glass

The Colline Lucchesi and Montecarlo denominations make the local wine, and Lucca DOP olive oil is the other name these hills carry.

Opening hours and closing days change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
