Eating in Montecatini Terme
Montecatini is a spa town, and it eats like one: many restaurants, concentrated in a few streets, with long hours because the people arriving are on holiday.
The sweet that carries the town's name
Cialde di Montecatini are two thin wafers with almonds and sugar pressed between them. They are still made by the historic pastry shops, and they are the town's edible souvenir.
Valdinievole cooking
Around it, the Valdinievole valley supplies what ends up on the menus: the Sorana bean IGP, grown on a tiny stretch of the Pescia riverbank; the hill olive oil; and, in Pescia, cioncia, a veal-muzzle stew that started among the tanners.
Where dinner happens
Restaurants cluster between viale Verdi and the spa park, which is the town's promenade. Up in Montecatini Alto — by the historic funicular, or ten minutes by car — the setting changes: a hilltop village with its square and its outdoor tables.
