Eating in Trapani

Trapani faces Africa, and the plate shows it: couscous here is not a recent fashion but home cooking, and has been for centuries.

The couscous

Trapani couscous is fish couscous: the semolina is rolled by hand, steamed in a *cuscusiera*, and moistened with a broth of rockfish. San Vito Lo Capo holds its festival, but it is eaten all year.

The dishes

  • Busiate with Trapani pesto — raw tomato, almonds, garlic and basil, crushed in a mortar;
  • Tuna from the tonnara — belly, bottarga, mosciame — from the Egadi islands;
  • Pane cunzato and artichoke caponata;
  • Fried cassatelle with ricotta.

The salt

Sale Marino di Trapani IGP is harvested in the salt pans between Trapani and Marsala, with their windmills: one of the province's landscapes.

In the glass

Marsala DOC — vergine, superiore, sweet — and whites from Grillo and Catarratto; on Pantelleria, in this province, Passito from Zibibbo.

The sweets of Erice

In Erice, above the city, they make genovesi filled with custard, served still warm.

Opening hours and closing days change. The ones on the listings come from public sources and may be out of date. Where a restaurant confirms tables with us, the availability you see is the real one.
